MINDFUL MUSEUM: Thoughtful Conversations about Art, Ideas, and Issues
“The Gallery As Urban Landscape: scree
1:30 – 3:30 pm (or whenever it feels finished)
Meet in the Art Center Restaurant for wine and cheese before heading into the exhibition
RSVP to Jill Featherstone, director of education via e-mail or by calling 515.271.0317

Join us for a thoughtful exploration of scree—Phyllida Barlow’s sculptural installations that have
transformed the gallery landscape of the Art Center’s sculpture court. I.M. Pei designed the 1968
addition to the Des Moines Art Center specifically for the display of sculpture, and scree is a rare
occasion when the Art Center has devoted this iconic architectural space to exhibiting the work
of an individual contemporary artist. Discuss with fellow Art Center members the immediacy of the
visitor’s experience as we try to find appreciation and meaning with these sculptures.

This is the third installment of Mindful Museum. Mindful Museum programs are FREE gallery
talks designed and facilitated by veteran docents Madelyn Mayberry and Jon Oakland
with an art-initiated audience in mind. The aim is to participate in explorative conversations
with people who enjoy delving more deeply into the issues presented by the art of our time.

"Talking in museums is one of the things that makes them matter, and the way in which we
talk in museums is one of the things that define for us what they are. Because museums,
I think, as much as they are places to go and see things, are also places to go and talk
about things, and, through talking, to understand something about the way life takes place
in time."  - Adam Gopnik, art critic and writer, "The Mindful Museum," The Walrus, June 2007
