Fingerman Lecture: Jaume Plensa
Thursday, November 12, 6:30 pm
Hoyt Sherman Place Theater, 1501 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines
FREE admission; reservations required*
Jaume Plensa has produced public projects all over the world, from Japan to Israel to Spain and Germany, but is best known for the Crown Fountain in Chicago’s Millennium Park and closer to home, Nomade (2007), a popular artwork in the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Plensa’s sculptures often involve light and invite interaction with the public. In Des Moines, viewers can experience Nomade from afar as well as by entering into the space of the sculpture. The work is lit from within and depicts a crouching figure, the artist’s son, with a “skin” composed of letters from the alphabet. Nomade exemplifies Plensa’s ongoing interests in the human body’s perception of the world around it and in ideas presented in written texts.
Art Center Director Jeff Fleming will commence the event introducing the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park and Jaume Plensa. The artist will then present an illustrated lecture about his body of work, featuring Nomade, and share his approach to making art for public spaces. We hope you will join us and learn more about this new tremendous feature of our capitol city.
This lecture is the twenty-first in the series made possible through generous gifts by Louis and Lois Fingerman.
