Beginning Drawing

Using pencil or charcoal, learn basic techniques and elements of composition, value contrasts, and line variations. Still life with an emphasis on realism is the subject matter of your drawings. This class is a recommended prerequisite for students who want to study painting, watercolor, or figure drawing.

Mixed Media Creative Figure Drawing

Figure Drawing Anatomy

Using the figure’s internal components, students see how they relate to design elements. Each week a focus on drawing elements such as weight, mass, gesture, and recessions are used to enhance form and foreshortening of the figure. Every level of student is invited to come to a better understanding of the figure to enhance expressive drawing.

PRINTMAKING

Multiples

Explore how to expand or “multiply” one idea for the subject of a painting or drawing into multiples or various versions of the original idea. Translate the idea with materials as well as by constant probing and further study of the subject matter. An initial drawing may lead to a monoprint, which may lead to a painting, and then to another drawing. Watch your original idea grow or multiply.

Open Studio: Soldering and Fabrication

Create a ring, bracelet, or pendant using different metal-working techniques. Construct exciting shapes and angles and incorporate them into your own jewelry designs. Saw, miter, bend, solder, rivet, and polish to create a one-of-a-kind wearable piece of art. This class is open to all levels of experience.

Open Studio: Chain Making and Wire Forming

Learn chain-making and wire-forming techniques to make bracelets, necklaces, and earrings from silver, copper, or brass. The chain-making techniques are triple-loop woven, interlocking, loop-in-loop, and chain mail. Wire-forming techniques include spirals, twisting, coils, weaving, and crocheting.

Glass Bead Making

Lampwork bead making is the process of shaping glass rods in the molten state over a torch to create amazing, distinctive, wearable glass beads. Studio setup, safety equipment, and multiple bead-working techniques are presented.

Mosaics

This ancient technique is often considered painting without paint, the execution of designs by setting small tiles into wet concrete. Using broken tile, ceramics, and/or found objects, design and make a project of your choice. Bring ideas to the first class.

Introduction to the Artist Book

Study the artist book through studio involvement, slides, lectures, and discussion. Learn how to design and bind a book using layers of paste painting on paper to create accidental imagery that contributes to the pages of the book. A unique personal symbol or sign and minimal text comprises the content of the book, based on the concertina structure. Students must bring a thoughtful list of ten traits that best describe themselves to the first class.

Silk Seti

You are invited to explore the traditions associated with oriental paintings on silk fabrics for decorative purposes. Discover the nuanced color, the fluid line, and subtlety of a craft developed and practiced in Indonesia, India, and Malaysia for hundreds of years. CERAMICS

The Art Center’s ceramics studio provides the beginner with the needed equipment for a successful learning experience. In addition, the Art Center offers an expanded program of ceramics studio classes held off-site at RDG Dahlquist Art Studio, located in the Art 316 Building at 316 SW 5th Street in downtown Des Moines, just south of Court Avenue. This program offers more open studio time and provides additional materials and equipment for the student.

Introduction to Ceramics

This class is designed to help you learn the fundamental techniques of hand building, wheel throwing, and raku ware. This is an opportunity to expand your knowledge of clay, slip, and glaze solutions.

Master Watercolor Class

“There is something nomadic about them [watercolors], you can take a piece of paper and your brushes anywhere. My studio isn’t in any fixed place; it’s something I can carry on my back.” Yan Pei-Ming

Rarely does an opportunity such as this present itself. Students with watercolor experience are invited to participate in a master class with artist Yan Pei-Ming. Yan studied with a traditional Chinese calligraphist during his youth in Shanghai and uses the medium of watercolor for his images of children. Responding to the works in the exhibition, each participant is asked to bring a photo of himself or herself as an infant to the class. The workshop is translated from French to English. Watercolor experience is necessary and students must bring required paint and brushes.

Dye Your Quilt Fabric

Have you ever wished that you could work with unique quilt fabrics, ones you dyed yourself? In this immersion dye workshop, come away with 8 – 16 one-of-kind hand-dyed fat quarters and a complete instructional handout, including a supplier’s list. Calligraphy Workshop: Uncial

Learn to write “Roman uncial” with a chisel-edged dip pen or marker. This all-cap script was commonly used as early as the third century by Latin and Greek scribes and is still used today for lettering and typography. Uncial is characterized by round pen-friendly strokes that are pleasing to the eye. It is a satisfying style for the beginner and with practice can be developed to have expression and elegance.
