SUMMARY:Immersive Film Series: The Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:IMMERSIVE FILM SERIES\nFilms are\, by their nature\, immersive experiences. For this brief series\, Curator (and film buff) Laura Burkhalter invited participating artist Matthew Willie Garcia and Dina Smith\, a film scholar and associate professor of English at Drake University\, to select movies that explore immersion through genre\, aesthetics\, and methods of worldbuilding. \nThe Lighthouse\, 2019\nRated R / 109 minutes\nPost-film commentary by Laura Burkhalter\, Curatorial Manager \nTwo lighthouse keepers (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Rich in historic detail and filmed to resemble 19th-century photography\, this surreal cinematic experience also has roots in the stories of Edgar Allen Poe\, Herman Melville\, and H.P. Lovecraft.

SUMMARY:Immersive Film Series: The Night of the Hunter
DESCRIPTION:IMMERSIVE FILM SERIES\nFilms are\, by their nature\, immersive experiences. For this brief series\, Curator (and film buff) Laura Burkhalter invited participating artist Matthew Willie Garcia and Dina Smith\, a film scholar and associate professor of English at Drake University\, to select movies that explore immersion through genre\, aesthetics\, and methods of worldbuilding. \nThe Night of the Hunter\, 1955\nCharles Laughton\, director\nNot rated / 93 minutes\nPost-film commentary by Dina Smith\, film scholar and Associate Professor of English at Drake University \nThe Night of the Hunter— the only film actor Charles Laughton ever directed—is truly a stand-alone masterwork. It stars a sinister Robert Mitchum as a traveling preacher whose nefarious motives for marrying a fragile widow\, played by Shelley Winters\, are uncovered by her terrified young children. Graced by images of eerie beauty and a sneaky sense of humor\, this ethereal\, expressionistic American classic is cinema’s most eccentric rendering of the battle between good and evil. This early independent film was produced by Des Moines native and Drake University graduate Paul Gregory\, and had its 1955 world premiere in Des Moines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Celebration: Images Unbound
DESCRIPTION:The world is overrun with images. From news\, film and television\, and social media to the countless photos stored on our phones\, we are constantly surrounded by pictures. With the invention of photography in the 19th century\, people began living in a world of images. Continued advances in camera technology and the invention of film have radically changed our relationship to art\, visual culture\, and the world around us. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries\, artists have explored the consequences and opportunities that arise when visual culture becomes untethered from its original context\, helping us navigate a world where images are always on the move. Images Unbound is the first exhibition by Associate Curator Mia Laufer for the Des Moines Art Center. \nJoin us for an exhibition preview party with handcrafted gourmet pops from Mangos Gourmet Paletas and a ‘step and repeat’ photo op in the Harriet S. and J. SUMMARY:American Apollo Opera
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with the Des Moines Metro Opera\, ‘American Apollo’ is a new opera based on a story forged at the crossroad of celebrity\, class\, race\, and power in America\, giving voice to a pivotal figure in American art: Thomas Eugene McKeller\, a Black model who served as inspiration for the famous portraitist\, John Singer Sargent. McKeller posed for most of the figures in Sargent’s murals at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts\, but the painter transformed McKeller’s figure into white gods and goddesses\, creating soaring allegories of the liberal arts that celebrated the recent expansion of the city’s premier civic museum. Themes of erasure\, the white gaze\, and the nature of the relationship between the two men are explored in this powerful new work. \nWith special contributions from Sargent scholar Nathaniel Silver and drawing on the recent Gardner Museum exhibition Boston’s Apollo\, this tale of individual courage and breathtaking vulnerability peels the varnish off venerable historical figures to reveal the beating heart and simmering desire beneath Sargent’s only uncommissioned monumental male nude. A short performance\, discussion\, and lecture with Gardner curator Dr. Nathaniel Silver is presented  in collaboration with the Des Moines Art Center and Pyramid Theatre. \nMusic by: Damien Geter\nLibretto by: Lila Palmer\nSung in: English (with English subtitles) \nReservations are available at desmoinesmetroopera.org. \nWednesday\, July 20 at 7:30 pm\nThursday\, July 21 at 2 pm\nSaturday\, July 23 at 2 pm \nJohn Singer Sargent (American\, 1856 – 1925)\nStudy of a Seated Male Nude for a Cartouche for the Rotunda of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, 1916-1921 (detail)\nCharcoal on paper\n63.3 x 48 cm (24 15/16 x 18 7/8 in.)\nIsabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Boston (S.G.Sar.4.1.5)

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Lucha libre and Día de los Muertos are cultural parallels of Mexican origins. The word lucha has a double meaning\, it is the name of the popular wrestling sport\, as well as the ability to use your whole heart and soul to overcome struggles and obstacles. Day of the Dead celebrations honor those who came before us\, our ancestors\, and those we have loved and lost. \nThis year\, the Des Moines Art Center\, in collaboration with Iowa Artist Miriam Alarcón Avila\, will infuse la lucha into our annual Day of the Dead Celebration\, honoring Our Luchadores Ancestors. \n“The beginning didn’t start here. Our ancestors followed the path\, opening the way and creating the space that allows us to be here now.” – Miriam Alarcón Avila \nWe invite you to join us for a day of food\, activities\, and entertainment in this festive fusion of Mexican traditions. Let us be together and share in the lucha of our ancestors and community! \nview the program and schedule \nTake advantage of easy parking and a free shuttle from Merrill Middle School\, running continuously from 11:30 am to 3 pm. \n“El comienzo no empezó aquí. Nuestros ancestros siguieron el camino\, abriéndose paso y creando el espacio que nos permite estar aquí ahora”. – Miriam Alarcón Ávila \nLes invitamos a un día de comida\, actividades y entretenimiento en esta festiva fusión de tradiciones mexicanas. ¡Reunámonos y compartamos la lucha de nuestros ancestros y nuestra comunidad! \nver el horario y el programa

SUMMARY:Ange Altenhofen’s Braille Series\, "Occupation: Coax\, Coddle\, and Caress"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Artist\, Ange Altenhofen’s interactive performance at the Des Moines Art Center. \nOf the five senses\, touch is arguably the most intimate. During the first year of the pandemic\, many people grappled with the realization that we could harm or even kill a loved one through a simple\, loving gesture: a kiss\, an embrace\, a caress… the warm breath of a whisper or a sigh. The artworks presented by Altenhofen in “Occupation: Coax\, Coddle\, and Caress” address the complexities of touch and relationships through the creation and activation of wearable objects that she thinks of as\, “surrogate lovers\, companions\, meditational devices\, and even parasites.” \nThe Braille Series was conceived following Altenhofen’s diagnosis with a degenerative eye condition that could lead to permanent blindness. Since that diagnosis\, she’s developed a keen interest in surfaces and how they define and inform interior space. “I began utilizing Braille as a surface texture\, represented by beads and gemstones embroidered onto various materials and forms\, not only to deliver information through the necessity of touch to communicate meaning\, but also to visually suggest blemishes on the skin that invite a haptic experience\, not unlike apes have while grooming one another.” \nAudiences are invited to watch Altenhofen’s performance throughout the Richard Meier building and interact with the artist’s work as they go. Guests can also touch the sculptures that Altenhofen presents along with her performance.
