SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Finding Mark Lowe Fisher
DESCRIPTION:A Collaborative Speaker Series Event with Capital City Pride – Join a conversation with Joy Episalla and James A. Baggett\, friends of Mark and comrades of the ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) affinity group The Marys\, as they recount the impact of this remarkable Iowan who used his death from AIDS as a political and moral statement meant to jar us into action. This event will be moderated by Dan Jansen\, Board Chair for Capital City Pride. \nMark Lowe Fisher was a gay man and activist from Iowa who turned his death from AIDS in 1992 into the ultimate political act. The architect’s body was carried in an open casket procession\, in the pouring rain\, from Judson Memorial Church in New York City’s West Village\, for almost 40 blocks north up 6th Avenue\, to West 43rd Street in front of Republican headquarters on the evening before that November’s Election in 1992. Mark’s political funeral was an active indictment of then President George W. Bush—highlighting his callous and complete inaction to do anything to help fight HIV/AIDS\, which by 1992 had taken the lives of nearly 200\,000 American citizens and caused Mark’s premature death. \nBefore he died\, Mark explained his desire for a political funeral in a document entitled Bury Me Furiously: “I have decided that when I die\, I want my fellow AIDS activists to execute my wishes for my political funeral. I suspect – I know – my funeral will shock people when it happens. We Americans are terrified of death. Death takes place behind closed doors and is removed from reality\, from the living. I want to show the reality of my death\, to display my body in public; I want the public to bear witness. We are not just spiraling statistics; we are people who have lives\, who have purpose\, who have lovers\, friends\, and families. And we are dying of a disease maintained by a degree of criminal neglect so enormous that it amounts to genocide. I want my death to be as strong a statement as my life continues to be. I want my own funeral to be fierce and defiant\, to make the public statement that my death from AIDS is a form of political assassination. We are taking this action out of love and rage.” \nThis event is free. REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:"Underneath Everything" Gallery Talk featuring Exhibition Artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an incredible gathering of Artists Katayoun Amjadi\, Eliza Au\, Heidi McKenzie\, and Ehren Tool. Hear them talk about various aspects of their work included in the exhibition\, “Underneath Everything: Humility and Grandeur in Contemporary Ceramics.” Exhibition Curator\, Mia Laufer\, Ph. D.\, will provide an overview of the exhibition and then each artist will introduce us to their work. \nKatayoun Amjadi is an Iranian-born\, Minneapolis-based artist\, educator\, and independent curator. In her work\, she often considers the sociopolitical systems that shape our perceptions of self and other\, such as language\, religion\, gender\, politics\, and nationalist ideologies. \nEliza Au is originally from Vancouver\, B.C. in Canada. She creates lattice-like ceramic objects which allude to architectural ornamentation in sacred spaces such as cathedrals\, temples\, and mosques. Her work explores how these spaces facilitate and fulfill the human need for meaning and understanding of the unknown. In her work\, she brings these patterns into a contemporary context by reinterpreting historical pattern with 3D printing and mold making. \nHeidi McKenzie is a ceramic artist based in Toronto\, Canada. McKenzie’s studio practice engages issues of race\, migration\, ancestry\, and decolonization. McKenzie began incorporating photographic imagery on clay in 2014 to viscerally depict the fragmentation of body and has moved on to explore image as archive. \nEhren Tool is a ceramic artist whose work is heavily influenced by his service in the Marine Corps and his subsequent return to the civilian world. Tool has made and given away over 25\,000 cups since 2001. Tool just makes cups and believes peace is the only adequate war memorial. \nThis event is free\, and no registration is required. \nImage: Top left: Heidi McKenzie\, “Division” (detail)\nTop right: Ehren Tool\, “Untitled”\nBottom left: Katayoun Amjadi\, “Dolorous Interlude” (detail)\nBottom right: Eliza Au\, “Sanctuary” (detail)\, Photo: John Joe

SUMMARY:Belonging Project Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Des Moines Art Center\, in partnership with Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa (RACI) and West Des Moines Public Schools’ Refugee and Immigrant Student Embassy (RISE) has brought together immigrant and refugee organizations to explore belonging through art and connection. Inspired by Ana Mendieta’s artwork\, on loan from the Art Bridges Foundation\, the Belonging Project program has included tours\, events\, and a collaborative art project designed by the RISE students. \nAna Mendieta’s iconic silueta artwork\, “Fundamento de Palo Monte: Silueta Series (Gunpowder Works)\,” 1980\, captures the artist’s exploration of her Cuban heritage and her connection to nature as a Cuban-exile in the United States. The film documents the transformation of a hollow bodily form filled with gunpowder\, set ablaze to reveal a pile of ash surrounding a raised-heart made of rocks. Mendieta’s performance embodies themes of destruction\, rebirth\, and the search for a sense of belonging to a specific time and place. \nJoin us at the Art Center for a reception and community celebration showcasing the completed artwork from the project. Don’t miss this inspiring event celebrating diversity\, culture\, and the power of art to create a sense of belonging.
