• What is the Community Access Program (CAP)?

The Community Access Program (CAP) is an initiative run by the Des Moines Art Center since 2000. CAP creates free art-making and creative engagement opportunities for people who face barriers to accessing art experiences. The program works with community partners to bring art into spaces where people live, learn, and connect.

CAP contracts a diverse group of teaching artists working in various mediums to facilitate classes in the community. These teaching artists use a student-centered method, creating a safe, respectful environment where everyone’s art is valued as an outlet for self-expression.

  • What types of organizations does CAP partner with?

CAP works with a wide array of nonprofit organizations, schools, human health organizations, and community groups that serve populations of individuals facing barriers, such as disabilities or economic barriers, to accessing art-making opportunities.

  • How does partnering with CAP benefit my organization?

Partnering with CAP enables your organization to bring free, quality art programming led by qualified teaching artists to your community. These experiences can support your mission by enhancing creative expression, community engagement, and well-being.

  • What kind of art-making is available?

CAP strives to make art as accessible and student-led as possible. Teaching artists will meet participants where they are and focus on the things that they are interested in exploring. There are a wide array of programming options that could include: painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, and more. No matter what medium is chosen, the focus is on the creative process and building confidence in artistic abilities.

We are committed to making our programs and experiences as accessible as possible for all visitors. Adaptive art-making tools and other accommodations are available—please contact us in advance so we can support your needs and ensure a welcoming experience.

  • What expectations are there in being a partner organization?

Partnerships are built around shared goals of accessibility and community engagement. Organizations typically support participant outreach and oversight while the CAP team provides teaching artists and a curriculum tailored to the partner organization’s community needs.
