Volunteer at the Day of the Dead celebration standing behind a table

Volunteer

Our major events would not be possible without the help of volunteers! There are many ways to volunteer at the Art Center throughout the year; events that require volunteers include our monthly Social Saturday and the annual Day of the Dead celebration. General roles include helping welcome visitors, support art activities, answer questions, and assisting Art Center Staff in keeping the event running smoothly.

If you are interested in volunteering and would like to receive information on upcoming volunteer opportunities, please fill out the form below.

Docents

A “docent” is a knowledgeable guide that leads tours of the museum and the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Volunteer docents share their love of art with others in a purposeful way; they help bring art to life for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

With a spirit of openness and collaboration, docents promote curiosity, critical observation, and empathetic thinking through dialogue and shared meaning-making experiences. This highly rewarding opportunity is open to all education levels and backgrounds. Prior art experience is not required, and the Des Moines Art Center provides all training.
