The Des Moines Art Center maintains a team of volunteers for education programming, museum tours, and event support.
Volunteer
Major community events would not be possible without the help of volunteers! There are many ways to volunteer at the Art Center throughout the year. Events that require volunteers include our monthly Social Saturday program and the annual Day of the Dead celebration. Volunteer roles include welcoming visitors, supporting art activities, answering questions, and assisting Art Center Staff in keeping the event running smoothly.

Docents
A “docent” is a knowledgeable guide that leads tours of the museum and the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Volunteer docents share their love of art with others in a purposeful way, helping bring art to life for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
With a spirit of openness and collaboration, docents promote curiosity, critical observation, and empathetic thinking through dialogue and shared experiences. This highly rewarding opportunity is open to all education levels and backgrounds. Prior art experience is not required, and the Des Moines Art Center provides all training.
