Graciela Iturbide (Mexican, born 1942), “Mujer/Angel (Woman/Angel)” [detail], 1979, printed 1996
“As You See Me: 20th Century Mexican Photography” features work by luminaries of Mexican photography spanning from the crucial decades following the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) to globalized era of the 1990s.
Including work by Yolanda Andrade, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Héctor Garcia, Flor Garduño, Kati Horna, Graciela Iturbide, Tina Modotti, and Mariana Yampolsky, “As You See Me” considers recurrent themes of mortality and ephemerality, drawing inspiration from a Mexican proverb. Together, these photographs balance a celebration of everyday life with reflection upon its fleeting nature.
The Art Center thanks Craig and Kimberly Shadur for their generous loans to this exhibition.
