Enjoy a Comfy, Cozy SNOW DAY at the Des Moines Art Center on January 10
DES MOINES, IOWA (December 8, 2025) – The Des Moines Art Center is excited to announce the launch of a new program in January 2026 called Social Saturdays. Supported by a grant from Art Bridges Access for All, which aims to increase and deepen participation in art museums, Social Saturdays will infuse the Art Center with the vibrant energy of community and connection. On the second Saturday of each month, between 11 am and 2 pm, the Art Center will offer opportunities for light-hearted fun, creativity, and social engagement. Activities will be offered across all areas of the Art Center, from the galleries, studio classrooms, and Bookey Family Courtyard to Levitt Auditorium, the Art Center Café, the Museum Shop, and more.
Social Saturdays will provide guests with the chance to choose their own adventure. Art lovers might decide to lose themselves amongst the beautiful collections and intriguing exhibitions. Some might join a guided tour with a volunteer docent or relax and watch a film in the auditorium, while others might wander the Art Center’s light-filled buildings, explore the beauty of Greenwood Park, or savor specialty food and beverages in the Art Center Café, presented by la mie. The Art School will open their studios for hands-on creativity and make-and-take workshops led by teaching artists. Families with younger children might sit in for storytime, led by the Art Center’s educators and, occasionally, guest readers.
Each Social Saturday will look a little different from the next. Taking inspiration from both the changing seasons and the abundant creativity that lives within the museum’s walls, each Social Saturday will feature a new theme, ensuring a unique experience for repeat visitors. Every month will offer a bit of a surprise, with a variety of workshops, films, tours, and pop-up activities, such as musical performances, board games, art carts, and scavenger hunts.
Social Saturdays are for fun, imagination, and conversation. They have a little something for everyone: all ages, many interests, united by creativity and community.
Join the Art Center’s inaugural Social Saturday event on January 10, from 11 am to 2 pm, and celebrate all things comfy and cozy with a SNOW DAY theme! Come in out of the cold as we warm up with hot chocolate in the Art Center Café, create snowmen prints in the Art School studios, enjoy a film exploring the paintings of artist Hilma af Klint, take a free guided tour in the galleries, and peruse the current exhibitions. Guests are invited to wear their coziest clothes, bundle up for sweater weather, and escape into joy and warmth at the Art Center.
Social Saturdays are free and open to the public.

About the Des Moines Art Center
Founded in 1948, the Des Moines Art Center is a vibrant, AAM-accredited (American Alliance of Museums) institution located in the capital city of Iowa that welcomes nearly 350,000 visitors annually from across the country and around the globe. The Art Center is proud to offer free admission to its galleries, programs, and sculpture park for all visitors. Our historic campus consists of three buildings designed by major architects of the 20th century — Eliel Saarinen, I. M. Pei, and Richard Meier — incorporated into the natural landscape of Greenwood Park. The largest art museum in the Greater Des Moines metro and one of the few in the state, the Art Center is home to one of the strongest collections of 20th- and 21st-century art in the region, and it hosts a series of ground-breaking exhibitions and lectures each year featuring artists known regionally, nationally, and internationally. The experimental art for which the Art Center cares is reflected in its creative offerings, including a celebrated education program that prioritizes access and collaboration, an art school with studio classes for all ages, and the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, situated on 4.4 acres in downtown Des Moines.
